Welcome to Theraplay UK®

Welcome to the website of Theraplay UK, the affiliated UK organisation to The Theraplay Institute and worldwide Theraplay family.

Here, you will be able to learn about Theraplay, what it is and the different contexts in which it is used. The website will also help you contact a Theraplay practitioner if you are a parent or a professional looking for therapeutic support for a carer or client. If you are interested in either Theraplay training for yourself or for your organisation, our training pages will explain the training routes that are available. Theraplay practitioners can access important guidelines and resources information.

What is Theraplay® ?

“Theraplay is a dyadic child and family therapy that has been recognized by the Association of Play Therapy as one of seven seminal psychotherapies for children. Developed over 50 years ago, and practiced around the world, Theraplay was developed for any professional working to support healthy child/caregiver attachment. Strong attachment between the child and the important adults in their life has long been believed to be the basis of lifelong good mental health as well as the mainstay of resilience in the face of adversity. Modern brain research and the field of neuroscience have shown that attachment is the way in which children come to understand, trust and thrive in their world.” (The Theraplay Institute)

A second modality of Theraplay is used in groups. Group Theraplay training is for professionals who want to use Theraplay in classrooms, day care, residential settings or with family groups. A Theraplay Group is an adult-directed, structured play group that incorporates playful, cooperative and nurturing activities that enhance the emotional well-being of children. Learning is experiential, instead of talking about positive social behaviour, the group leaders and children DO positive social interaction.

Building Relationships from the Inside Out

In sessions, the Theraplay® Practitioner guides the parent and child through playful, fun games, developmentally challenging activities, and tender, nurturing activities (and the experience is similar in Group Theraplay). The very act of engaging each other in this way helps the parent regulate the child’s behaviour and communicate love, joy, and safety to the child. It helps the child feel secure, cared for, connected and worthy.

Theraplay UK is an affiliate of The Theraplay® Institute. Theraplay® is a registered service mark of The Theraplay® Institute in the United States, Australia, Canada, the European Union (with the exception of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland), Hong Kong, Japan, Norway, South Korea and Chile.)
